Running to Greatness: Gill St. Bernard's Boys' and Girls' Cross Country Teams Break Barriers

The 2024 fall season was a testament to the growth, determination, and camaraderie of the Gill St. Bernard’s Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams. Under the guidance of Varsity Head Coach Michael Parker, both squads showcased significant progress, culminating in some remarkable achievements.

“We’re very proud of what we got done this cross country season,” Coach Parker said. “The teams kept getting faster week to week.”

The boys’ team displayed grit and resilience, highlighted by a standout performance at the Group Championship. Senior Evan Alfaro ran the fastest race of his career, achieving a personal record and helping the Knights defeat Morristown-Beard and MKA, two teams that had bested them earlier in the season.

“We wish the season was not ending,” Alfaro shared. “We got four runners under 20:00, and we just needed one more opportunity to have our top five boys finish in less than 20:00 for a 5K race. It’s something I thought was impossible at the start of the season.”

Key contributors to the team’s success included freshman Ryan Tedesco and juniors Davis Herr and Oliver Litchfield, all of whom delivered impressive performances throughout the season.

The girls' team had a phenomenal season, winning the Mountain Division of the Skyland Conference, finishing second in the Prep races, and securing third place at the Group Championship.

Senior standout Ema Hercules continued to shine, qualifying for the Meet of Champions for the third time in her career. Hercules also broke the 20-minute mark three times this season, a remarkable feat.

Reflecting on the season, Hercules shared, “We are a very close team. I love my teammates, and we had a great season. I will miss running with the other seniors—Maddie, Ellie, Bridget, Katie, Kendall, and Angie.”

The season was filled with milestones and unforgettable moments: both teams exemplified the spirit of cross country: hard work, dedication, and unity. Congratulations to all the runners for a fantastic season, and best wishes to the seniors who have left an indelible mark on the program!
