The Parents’ Association launched the upcoming school year’s community events at their annual Welcome Breakfast last Thursday, September 14, 2023, in the Athletic Center. Parents and guardians enjoyed delicious morning smoothies and baked items, caught up on the first days of school, and visited decorated promotional tables of the many up-and-coming activities including Homecoming, Culture Night, and Family BINGO.
New this year, two highly anticipated events were introduced to guests: Evening At the Inn, set for Thursday, November 9, 2023, at The Bernards Inn, and—back by popular demand—a GSB hosted Comedy Night in the Performing Arts and Community Center, planned for Friday, April 12, 2024.
Once everyone was seated, attendees were welcomed by event Co-Chairs Tanya Moeller P’32, Michele Winneker P’32, and Nicole Kolb P’20, ’22, ’25. They kicked off the presentation portion by introducing Lauren Salko P’27, ’30, the new PA President for the 2023-2024 school year.
Mrs. Salko reflected on how inspiration surrounds our GSB campus, and she encouraged new and returning families to join a committee, get involved, and attend one of the many events, commenting that "Gathering with new and old friends at GSB events encourages us to stay connected, to find a sense of belonging, and to welcome new families into our caring and supportive community."
Head of School Sid Rowell P’08, ’14 then spoke at the podium and thanked Mrs. Salko as well as the PA Executive Team for their enduring commitment. Mr. Rowell shared the strong evidence which shows the overwhelming benefit and importance of parent and guardian participation in the learning process and in ongoing reading and learning for all ages.
Continuing with the theme of inspiration, Director of Development Meredith Marks then spoke about the privilege of working with the PA, and she challenged the audience to think about what inspired them to give of their time, treasure, and talent. She invited parents and guardians to volunteer with a beloved quote from Shakespeare, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away,” noting how everything they do directly impacts the opportunities and experiences of our students.
Additional presentations from PA Steering Member Chairs, Athletic Director Jenn Noon, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tracey Goodson Barrett all echoed the rewards of getting involved in the GSB community.
