Longtime GSB Faculty Member, Dr. Andy Lutz, Awarded Prestigious Chair of Excellence

By Associate Director of Marketing and Communications Kathleen Bartlett

Upper School English Teacher and longtime Gill St. Bernard’s School faculty member, Dr. Andy Lutz P ’20, ’25, has been named this year’s recipient of the prestigious St. Bernard’s Chair of Excellence in Teaching.

Announced at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony on June 8, 2025, by Head of School Sid Rowell and the previous year’s recipient, Fine Arts Department Chair Sarah Isusi P ’27, the Chair of Excellence is awarded annually to a full-time faculty member in honor of their outstanding work with students. Dr. Lutz joined the GSB faculty in 2003 and for over two decades has tirelessly guided students in their academic and personal journeys, preparing them for college and a meaningful life. In addition to teaching a diverse academic course load that included AP English Literature and Composition, English 10: American Meaning, and Creative Writing Classes, he has acted as club advisor to GSB’s literary magazine, led countless Spring Unit trips including this year’s adventure to Monhegan Island entitled “Maine Islands, Writers, and Artists,” and helped budding writers hone their voices and craft through poetry readings, literary cafes, and creative writing spotlights.

Congratulations, Dr. Lutz, on receiving this honor and for all that you have done for generations of GSB students.

St. Bernard’s Chair of Excellence in Teaching

The St. Bernard’s Chair of Excellence in Teaching award was created in 1991, when a group of St. Bernard’s Alumni decided to establish an award to honor outstanding teachers at Gill St. Bernard’s. They did so because they understood the profound impact that a good teacher can have on a student and because they were grateful for the wonderful teachers they had when they were students at the school. Nominations for the award are submitted by the school community, with faculty, students, parents, staff, and alumni submitting recommendations across the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.

A single faculty member may be recognized with this honor only once. Names of past award recipients are listed below.
