Knights Reach Regional Final; Taylor ’20 Records 100th Hit

Knights Reach Regional Final; Taylor ’20 Records 100th Hit
It was an unforgettable three days for the baseball squad as the Knights competed in a one-of-a-kind statewide tournament, titled the “Last Dance World Series.” The tournament served as an opportunity for over 200 high school baseball teams throughout New Jersey to experience some semblance of a competitive season. GSB kicked off their respective pool play on July 14, with an exciting 7-4 victory over local rival Pingry. The Knights began the game with a bang, as Eddie McCarthy '20 got the first hit of the tournament for GSB, sparking a three-run first inning. GSB was also led by a phenomenal pitching performance by Chris Boney ’20, striking out nine while pitching all seven innings for Gill. The Knights’ next contest came the following morning against another local opponent, Hillsborough. Once again, GSB was powered by great pitching as Joe Skapinetz ’21 threw five shutout innings and closer Matt Kalinak '21 got the final out with a bases loaded strikeout to secure Gill's 3-1 victory over the Raiders and advance to their respective Regional Final. Gill took on Ridge in the championship game on Thursday, July 16, in what turned out to be a very tight contest. Jake Sempervive ’21 threw multiple scoreless innings to keep the score at 0-0. After falling behind 1-0, GSB jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the fifth inning, but unfortunately ultimately fell, 6-2. The game was still memorable however, as future Fordham University Ram Mike Taylor ’20 recorded his 100th career hit – a monumental accomplishment. “It was great to get three days on the field together after what was obviously a devastating spring,” said Head Coach Dave Pasquale. “Considering the circumstances, advancing to a regional final gives these seniors something to be very proud of. I thought our guys played well, but more importantly it reminded all of us what the game of baseball and special teammates can provide. It gave Chris, Eddie, and Michael one last time to shine together, and it also gave the rest of the boys a glimpse of what is an extremely bright future for the program.”
