Gill St. Bernard’s recently celebrated the 22nd anniversary of Turkey Day, a cherished tradition that embodies the school’s commitment to service and community. This year’s effort was extraordinary, with the GSB community collecting an impressive 609 frozen turkeys to support families in need during the holiday season.
Since its founding in 2003 by former Head Librarian Randi Schmidt, Turkey Day has grown into a cornerstone event for GSB. What began as an emergency response to help the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) after a truck accident has blossomed into a decades-long partnership. Over the years, GSB has contributed more than 10,000 turkeys, making a lasting impact on hunger relief efforts across New Jersey.
Students from Preschool through Grade 12 came together to make this year’s collection a success, with critical support from parents, faculty, staff, and the Operations Team, who ensured smooth delivery to CFBNJ. These donations will soon reach soup kitchens and pantries, offering hope and sustenance to countless families.
The celebration wasn’t just about giving back—it was also about coming together. Students enjoyed a variety of community-building activities, including the fan-favorite “Turkey Trot” in the afternoon, adding fun and camaraderie to the day.
Reflecting on this enduring tradition, Head of School Sid Rowell, who has proudly supported every Turkey Day since its inception, shared, “The collection of frozen turkeys to support the New Jersey food bank is a long-standing tradition at Gill St. Bernard’s School. The generous support our community displays each Thanksgiving is among the most impactful things that we do.”
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this heartwarming tradition. Your generosity continues to make a real difference!
