The Gill St. Bernard's Varsity Girls' Soccer team wrapped up an extraordinary season, finishing with a stellar 19-4 record, a dramatic improvement from the 4-13 record only one year earlier.
The Knights dominated the Skyland Conference—Mountain Division, going undefeated with a 13-0 record to claim the title, and they excelled in the postseason, finishing as the Prep B runner-up and reaching the Non-Public B sectional finals.
While the season began with a narrow 2-1 loss to Newark Academy, the team made a triumphant comeback nearly a month later, avenging that loss with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the Prep B Tournament. Challenging matches against nationally ranked Rutgers Prep (#1 in the state, #2 in the country) and Depaul (#2 in the state, #7 in the country) resulted in losses, but the Knights demonstrated their grit by holding both teams to 1-0 at halftime.
Head Varsity Coach Donna Bednarsky P ’08, ’10, ’14, ’17 reflected on the season with pride, saying, “I’m most proud of the way the team bonded on and off the field. This group worked incredibly hard, and it showed. It’s hard to single out just a few players because everyone contributed, whether they were starters or came off the bench.”
Two standouts among the very strong team included senior Captain and Pace University-commit Meredith Klosek, who delivered an exceptional final season, netting 25 goals and a remarkable 28 assists, making her the third all-time leader in program assists with 57. Sophomore Brenna Buraszeski led the team in scoring with 28 goals.
The team’s considerable improvement was fueled by rigorous offseason preparation, and their fitness allowed them to avoid injuries and compete at the highest level throughout the year. The bond among the players was equally vital, with seniors providing exceptional leadership and fostering a supportive environment for younger teammates, including three starting freshmen and three sophomores.
In the end, the Knights’ 2024 season wasn’t just about wins—it was about laying the foundation for future success. With a mix of experienced leadership and promising young talent, the future of Gill St. Bernard's Girls' Soccer looks brighter than ever.
