The Gill St. Bernard's Varsity Girls' Lacrosse team showcased incredible determination and spirit over the spring 2024 season, and despite finishing with a losing 2-14 record, the athletes established a supportive culture whereby they constantly worked together, even during tough times.
“I am proud of this team for the chemistry they established this year,” said Head Varsity Coach Gina Verrone. “It is hard to have a losing season, but these girls lifted each other up and maintained a positive attitude throughout. They supported each other, which is the most important aspect of any team sport.”
Team Co-Captains Elliana Toledo ’24 and Barbara Caspersen ’24 led by example on and off the field, stepping up during practice and games whenever needed, and working hard to bring everyone together.
Co-Captains Sofia Criscola ’25 and Alexa Gnapp ’25 brought energy and dedication, and as returning players on the team, they set the groundwork for continued leadership in the coming season.
The season's standout moment came with the team's first win at Boonton, a thrilling 10-8 match up that saw the score see-sawing between the teams until the final whistle. The girls kept their focus and intensity, and after a complete team effort, the win went to the Knights.
Toledo’s outstanding performance over the season earned her All-Conference honors, and she ended with an impressive 25 goals, three assists, 45 ground balls, and 58 draw controls.
Sophomore Arianna Tellalian also had a remarkable season, contributing significantly to the team's efforts with 28 goals, three assists, 44 ground balls, and 29 draw controls. Freshman Emery Scavino, the team's goalie, was a critical player throughout, finishing with 141 saves in her first season with the Knights.
“We worked hard on fundamental skills this season so that we can build into more advanced play next season,” said Coach Verrone. “By combining the team’s culture of sticking together with all that we’ve learned from this year, we will definitely rise to the occasion next year.”
