GSB Track & Field Claims Multiple Titles in Strong Season

The 2021-22 season was a memorable one for the GSB Track & Field program.

From April to June, the Knights traveled throughout the Tri-State area to compete in several distinguished competitions such as the NJSIAA Prep B Championship, Somerset County Championships, and the prestigious Penn Relays. Head Coach Steve Leo was specifically proud of the team’s improvement during the season despite practice challenges.

“Everyone’s times and marks improved every week, and we became a competitive team in NJ Prep B and Non-Public B,” commented Coach Leo.

“This was all done while our track was under renovations this season. We also had some new freshman and sophomores make big contributions which will us reload for next season. The youth we have coming up is very promising and the veterans will be even better.”

There were several key standouts across the program.

Senior Joe Licata finished his storied GSB career as 2nd all-time in both the Shotput and Discus. The Princeton-bound athlete not only won every Conference meet he competed in but placed 1st in the Non-Public B State Championship County Championship and NJ Prep B Championships. Licata also placed as the top overall American athlete during the Penn Relays. Joe will close his season out in the Meet of Champions before competing in the New Balance Nationals at UPenn.

Senior Zac Saunders also qualified for the Meet of Champions in Shot Put while placing 1st at the E. Todd Murray Invite and 2nd in both the Prep B Championships and Skyland Conference Championships. Zac finishes his career 3rd all-time in GSB Shot Put History.

Senior Kellyn Bucceri showed her versatility in her first year of outdoor track after competing Indoor for three seasons. The senior captain earned 1st place in the 100-meter Hurdles at the Skyland Conference and 2nd Place at the E. Todd Murray Invite.

Senior captain Will Strong battled through injuries to lead our distance group and had a nice finish at the NPB Group State Championships.

Junior Aniyah Boston earned her spot as the fastest athlete on the Girls’ Team with several strong finishes throughout the season. Competing in the 100-meter Sprint, Boston placed 4th in the Skylands, 9th in Prep Bs, and posted the 3rd fastest time in GSB history in the event.

Sophomore Samantha Leo followed a strong freshman campaign by placing 2nd place in the Long Jump at the Skylands and 3rd place in the Prep B Championships. She is currently 6th all-time in the Long Jump event.

Freshman newcomer Ema Hercules earned her spot on the Varsity roster as a strong distance runner. Hercules placed 5th in the 1600M at the NJ Prep B and Non-Public B Group Championships while poster the 2nd fastest time for a freshman in school history.

The Knights added to their individual success with a strong 6th place finish in the Non-Public B State Championships, as well as setting two new school records. During the Morris Hills Relays on April 16, Cassidy Moore, Aniyah Boston, Samantha Leo, and Kellyn Bucceri teamed up to set the school record in the Girls’ 4x200 Relay. On the same day, Drew Vollrath, Will Engelke, Jonathan Ferreira, and Mike Dumiec stepped up to set the new school record in the Boys’ Sprint Medley Relay.

Coach Leo credits the team success to his senior captains, Licata, Bucceri, and Will Strong.

“Joe, Kellyn, and Will were leaders on and off the track. They not only led the team daily in practices but led by example in practice and at meets. They are our assistant coaches to a degree, and I can’t thank them enough for making our jobs as coaches easier. The kids all look up to them and respect their work ethic. Thank you to our coaches Kristin Licata, Christina Temnycky, and Mike Parker, Trainer Glen Depino, and Athletic Director Will Taylor for all of their hard work this year. We would not have the success this season with out their help."
