Members of the Gill St. Bernard’s Upper School Student Government joined Fourth Graders on Wednesday, January 29, for a special cross-divisional service initiative, Love for LA, in Evans Hall.
As part of this effort, students created heartfelt cards for five schools impacted by the devastating California Wildfires. Preschool through Third Grade students also took part by designing their own cards in their classrooms. Once completed, the collection of messages—filled with encouragement and hope—was packaged with new socks and sent to schools that had been tragically burned down or severely damaged.
“The Lower School chose the Love for LA project because the California Wildfires are something that the students have seen on the news, and it’s something they can connect with,” said Lower School Instructor Katie Carbone ’11. “This project is important because it allows them to understand that their actions can have an immediate, positive impact on others.”
The GSB Lower School participates in The Great Kindness Challenge, a nationwide initiative to create a culture of kindness, as part of their annual Kindness Week celebration, and Love for LA was one of the many activities offered. Throughout the week, the Fourth Grade Kindness Crew led the Lower School in special activities, encouraging everyone to embrace this year’s theme: “Color the World with Kindness.”
“The Great Kindness Challenge is a global initiative with so many different opportunities to get involved,” Carbone said. “Activities were chosen that best fit our school, and the goal is to find meaningful activities that celebrate kindness or show kindness—or as we like to say ‘sprinkles kindness like confetti’ throughout the school.”
A big thank you to all the students who took part in Love for LA and helped make the world a kinder, better place!
