GSB Softball Program Aims to Continue Its Storied Run

Coming off a Prep B Championship and back-to-back trips to the Non-Public B Sectional finals, expectations for the GSB Softball Program are sky high.

The Knights, who have collected 37 wins over the past two years, enter their 2023 season led by senior tri-captains Elise Cantu, Vanessa Mavraj, and Emma Moussally.

Cantu, who is committed to continue her career at the Coast Guard Academy next season, will make the switch to catcher after earning All-Conference and All-Area honors as an outfielder last season. Mavraj, a two-time All-Conference selection, will provide a powerful bat and sure-handed fielding at third base, while utility player Moussally adds a punch to the lineup and vital flexibility across the diamond.

Other key contributors include juniors Brooke Baisley and Julianna Perri as well as sophomores Emily Titsworth and Katie Lutz. Baisley (two-time All-Conference, All-Area) has amassed 80 hits over her GSB career and looks to join the 100-career hit club while patrolling centerfield. Perri (All-Conference) adds spectacular defense up the middle and speed at top of the order. Titsworth (All-Conference) will be counted on to log major innings in important games this year after collecting 17 wins her freshman season. Lutz will also look to build on a solid freshman year while providing sure handedness at multiple positions.

The Knights also bring in an exciting group of first year players this season. Freshmen infielder Jillian Cianfrocca, pitcher Layla Francisco, utility player Sammie Kalinak, third baseman Lexi Kolensky, utility player Brynn McCarthy, catcher Elia Titmas, and first baseman Julianne Witte will all compete to make an immediate impact on the program as the Knights face off against an ambitious regular season schedule.

“Our schedule is no walk in the park,” said Head Coach Mike Surella.

“We have a nice mix of experienced returning players and talented freshmen who will need to come together quickly if we’re to revisit our previous years’ success. I’m excited to see what this group can do.”
