GSB Lower School Unveil 10th Annual Biome Museum

GSB Lower School Unveil 10th Annual Biome Museum

Not many schools can say they construct a living, breathing museum every school year. Even fewer can say the exhibits were designed entirely by students!

As an annual Lower School tradition since 2014, GSB students from Preschool to Grade 4 transformed the Cox building last week into the 2024 Biome Museum — a creative, research-based display of living habitats in our state and around the world.

In the trimester-long project, students learn about habitats, a place where plants and animals live, and how different habitats have distinctive biodiversity characteristics. Through their studies, students not only learned about the incredible diversity here on earth, but also how to conduct scientific research, how to practice conservation efforts, and how to take action in protecting our environment.

After learning about local and global habitats, Each Lower School grade was challenged this year to conduct an in-depth examination of a different animal group:

Farm Animals: Preschool, Prekindergarten, Kindergarten

Birds: 1st Grade

Invertebrates: 2nd Grade

Heritage Animals: 3rd Grade

Salt Marsh Animals: 4th Grade

GSB families were invited to explore the 2024 Biome Museum at an open house on Friday, May 24. The museum featured a wide-collection of projects that students developed with their Homeroom, Science, Art, Spanish, Music, Library, and Physical Education teachers. Every inch of the hallway was utilized to showcase multimedia art projects in English and Spanish, animal trivia challenges, poems, habitat facts, and report projects. Students also proudly used tablets to scan interactive portions of their projects to showcase digital elements of their animal research to family and friends.

In addition to their work on campus, students also "stepped into the wild" on several different field trips this school year to complement their area of study. Preschool, PreK, and Kindergarteners were beyond thrilled to visit Home Winds Farm to meet GSB's newest farm animal friends; 1st Graders were amazed exploring owls and other birds at The Raptor Trust 2nd Graders had a fun-filled time learning about insects at the Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary; 3rd Graders conducted important research at the Turtle Back Zoo; and 4th Graders had a great day at Sandy Hook for the Every Kid Outdoors program.

Please join us in congratulating our students on another wonderful Biome Museum. View our Museum photo gallery below!
