The Gill St. Bernard’s School community gathered on Friday, June 5, 2026, to celebrate an important milestone for the Class of 2034 as Fourth Grade students marked their transition from Lower School to Middle School during the annual Lower School Closing Exercises.
Surrounded by family, friends, and faculty in the Matthew Theater in the Performing Arts and Community Center, students reflected on a year of growth, learning, and achievement. The ceremony highlighted the close-knit spirit of the Lower School community and honored the accomplishments of the graduating class through student presentations, reflections, and cherished traditions.
Lower and Middle School Director Kyle Armstrong P ’21, ’29, ’36 welcomed attendees and reflected on the impact students can have on the world through their everyday actions. Drawing inspiration from the book You Make the World by Muon Thi Van, which was presented to each student as a parting gift, Armstrong encouraged the Class of 2034 to recognize the power of kindness, empathy, and authenticity.
“As the title suggests, you have the capacity to impact the world by the things you say and do,” Armstrong told students. “You truly make the world a better place by engaging with the people around you. There is no doubt, Fourth Graders, that you will make the Middle School classrooms and hallways shine bright in the years to come.”
The program featured a video montage celebrating memorable moments from the school year, as well as a student-led presentation focused on the importance of kindness. The Fourth Grade Chorus brought the ceremony to a joyful close with a spirited performance of “Count on Me” by The Smeezingtons.
Lower School Assistant Director Jill Fedon P ’27 presented students with their Middle School pins, officially welcoming them to the next stage of their GSB experience. Head of School Dr. Delvin Dinkins also recognized Sunsierre “Sunny” Martin as the recipient of the 2026 Amol Ajinkya Citizenship Award.
Congratulations to the Class of 2034 on this meaningful accomplishment. We look forward to seeing all they will achieve as they begin their Middle School years.
