GSB Indoor Track & Field Warms-Up for a Winning Season

The speediest Knights are warming up for a fast-paced season of running, hurdling, jumping, and throwing, where their hard-earned goal will be to make an impact in the Preps and Non-Public B State Championships.

“We have a young, talented, and motivated team that will focus on gaining experience this winter,” Head Coach Shelly LaBarre said. “Many of the athletes are coming off a successful fall season and are new to Indoor Track & Field.”

Coach LaBarre started coaching GSB Outdoor Track & Field in 1999, and she began the Indoor Track & Field Team in 2000. Now in her third decade with the program, she is joined by Assistant Coaches Mike Parker & Pete Roslund. The team also works very closely with Steve Leo, Head of Strength and Conditioning, in the weight room to avoid injury.

Leading the very determined team are a multi-talented group of seniors ready to increase the level of competition including Elise Cantu (distance), Will Engelke (sprints/hurdles), Peter Horton (mid distance/jumps), Laksh Patel (mid distance/sprints), Caroline Rongen (distance), Tyler Tellalian (mid distance), Drew Vollrath (sprints) and Delaney Yates (mid distance/sprints).

Joining them in competition will be a versatile trio of juniors Samantha Leo (sprints/long jump), Liam Seeley (distance), and Lex Webber (distance) and an equally hungry group of sophomores: Angie Bonaventura (mid distance), Sanjay De Silva (throwing), Ema Hercules (distance), Catie Klein (throwing), James O'Brien (distance), Ellie Roslund (distance), and Michael Simonelli (throwing).

All returning athletes will assist in onboarding the newest members of the team: freshmen Braelyn Brandl, Alberto Diaz, Ciara DeCarlo, Davis Herr, Benjamin Keller, Oliver Litchfield, Rohan Norden, Oyinkansola Opawuyi, Stephanie Perez, and Neil Procaccino.

“It’s our first season on the new track,” Coach LaBarre said, “and we are so excited to train on this state-of-the-art surface.”

That training will be put to the test during the season opener, the Wayne Gardiner Holiday Relays, on December 17, 2022, hosted by Randolph High School at Drew University.
