As preseason rolls on, the GSB Girls’ Tennis program is putting in the time, effort, and energy to capitalize on their 2022-23 season.
With 22 players on this year’s roster, the Knights are ready to build on last year’s season, where they finished 3rd in a competitive Skyland-Raritan division. Head Coach Chris Walsh, who enters his first season as head of the girls’ varsity program, feels confident in his team’s approach to growing their game.
“The girls have worked very hard this preseason and their commitment to the program has been outstanding,” said Coach Walsh.
“They are improving every day, and they are really bonding well together. Our aspirations for the season are to be very competitive in each match, and the hard work and commitment to the Program will lead to victories on the Varsity and JV levels.”
The Knights are led by Senior Tri-Captains Stephanie Lu (three-time letter winner), Paige Brucker (two-time letter winner), and Coco Cooper (two-time letter winner), each of whom are very familiar with the Girls’ Tennis program and are excited to showcase their skills in their final varsity season. The group is also accompanied by fellow Senior Katie Udoff, who returns to anchor the Doubles team.
Other key returning players include Juniors Kate Hill and Tessa Mueller, and Sophomores Bianca Cooper, Libby Scott, and Alexa Gnapp. All four players have played very well during preseason and look to continue their success during the year.
Coach Walsh’s roster is rounded out by 10 newcomers: Juniors Barbara Caspersen, Julianna Perri, Charlotte Gajewski, and Mena Orozco; Sophomores Jillian Garrubbo, Campbell Macak, and Erica Mars; and Freshmen Ella Petilla, Chloe Garrubbo, and Maia Frank. Frank joins the GSB program after competing for Gill’s middle school team last year and will be a big contributor at first singles in her freshmen year.
The Girls’ Tennis season kicks off on September 7 at Somerville High School. Be sure to check out the full season schedule on the GSB website!
