The GSB Girls’ Tennis program wrapped up their 2022 season with an improved record and their eyes on a bright future.
The Knights finished with a final record of 6-7, building off their 3-9 record from last season and earning 3rd place in a very competitive Skyland-Raritan Division. The team’s improved record is even more impressive considering they took on a challenging schedule that included some of the top programs in the state, which Head Coach Chris Walsh believes played large dividends.
“The girls gained valuable experience throughout the season,” said Coach Walsh. “Three exciting wins came against North Hunterdon, Watchung Hills and their Senior Day match against Immaculata! The last Immaculata match was very special with us going 5-0 and winning each match in two sets!”
This year’s roster was highlighted by 2nd Singles Player Kate Hill ’24, who led the team with 7 victories including a massive victory against Rutgers Prep. Senior Captains Stephanie Lu, Paige Brucker, and Coco Cooper also posted strong seasons in their last year on the program, with each player earning a senior day win against Immaculata while acting as great leaders for younger players. The Doubles tandem of Cooper and Julianne Perri ’24 continued to improve throughout the season and ended up winning five matches. Newcomer Maia Frank '26 had a highly impressive freshman season, winning five very important matches for the team including a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against North Hunterdon and a hard fought 6-2, 6-4 victory against Watchung Hills.
Coach Walsh is looking forward to welcoming back Hill, Perri, Frank, and other key contributors on the varsity level such as Katie Udoff ’23, Barbara Caspersen ’24, Charlotte Varela-Gajewski ’24, and Jillian Garrubbo ’25 next season.
“I am proud of the team's commitment during pre-season and the way all of the girls connected to form great comradery, both at the Varsity and Junior Varsity level,” said Coach Walsh.
“We are developing very well at the Middle School and JV level with Coach Leslie, who did an excellent job bringing her knowledge of Tennis Skill Development and incorporating that into Match-Play. We’re becoming an exciting, very enthusiastic and hard-working program, and if we can continue to attract more and more players, the future looks very bright!
