GSB Girls’ Softball brought the heat last season, setting the record for the most wins (20) and advancing to the state sectional finals for the first time in school history. Several players were named to the All-Area team, and two players were named All-State.
“We finished 9th in New Jersey Non-Public Schools,” said Coach Michael Surella. “I'm excited to see how we handle success this year after achieving GSB’s best softball season ever last year.”
The team graduated six seniors, who will be greatly missed; however, this year's roster is primed to step into their shoes. Returning for 2022 are two All-Area players, sophomore Brooke Baisley, who led the team in homeruns last year, and Senior Captain and Muhlenberg-commit Scooter Hulsen, who led the team with 50 hits. Scooter is only 22 hits away from being the second player in GSB history to reach 100 career hits.
Also returning from a very successful 2021 season are Senior Captain Phoebe Kirsh, senior leader Stephanie Vasquez, powerful junior Vanessa Mavraj, and sophomore speedster Julianna Perri.
New to the squad this year are juniors Emma Moussally and Elise Cantu, who will provide experience and flexibility, and junior Grace Crimi, who brings speed and depth in the outfield.
Additionally, a talented group of freshmen are geared up and waiting to contribute immediately. Freshman Emily Titsworth has big shoes to fill replacing All-State selection Claire Brouillard as the team’s pitcher, but she has worked hard and is ready for the challenge. Freshman Katie Lutz and Catie Klein will join her on the field; both are utility players who have lots of club experience and high softball IQ’s.
“We are young but athletic and very versatile with all our players capable of playing multiple positions,” said Coach Surella. “It may take us awhile to find our footing, but I'm confident that by state tournament time, we will be playing our best softball.”
