GSB Girls’ Lacrosse: Work Hard, Prep Hard, Play Hard

GSB Girls’ Lacrosse enters the preseason with a powerful roster as fourteen letter winners return for the 2021-22 season.

Returning players include senior tri-captains Lily Micera (defense), Sydney Goldberg (attack), and Katie Scott (middle/attack). Unfortunately, Katie is currently out for the season due to an injury, but she will continue to support the team with administration and individual player sideline help. The tri-captains join three other seniors, Belle Campion (attack), Lea Gnoy (defense), and Kayla Palaia (defense), to lead the team on the field while providing guidance for underclassmen eager to make their mark.

“At the first day of practice, we had 19 girls and 19 different levels of play,” said Head Coach Denise Wilson. “What’s amazing is seeing that number of levels diminish day by day. They grow as the season grows.”

Incoming players primed for growth include returning juniors Paige Brucker, who will anchor the team as goalkeeper, club players Ava DiCesare (middie) and Ava Robustelli (defense), and GSB soccer player Delaney Yates (middie).

“This year we are continuing with our Big-n-Littles; the captains have paired up the upper classmen (big sisters) with the underclassmen (little sisters). Big/Littles have been great in the past to help not only with bonding but also with team motivation and accountability,” said Coach Wilson, who is entering her fourth year at the head of the program with the same enthusiasm for the game as in past years. She is joined by Assistant Coach Sam Siegel, who is in her 3rd year at GSB.

Those underclassmen include returning sophomores Elliana Toledo, Barb Caspersen, Isabel Barsanti, and Tess Mueller, and new freshman Sofia Criscola, Alexa Gnapp, Abby Novinski, Ava Roslund, and Libby Scott.

“The advantage to a smaller team is that each girl garners playing time. Facing new teams, ones which they’ve never played before, facilitates faster growth and development as an athlete—and as a team,” said Coach Wilson.

“These girls will not only be working hard but working hard together. They push each other and support each other, so when they play in a game together, it is organic and fluid. That’s a true team.”
