GSB Cross Country Kicks into Gear

The GSB Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams are ready to take their marks.

With preseason under way, 27 athletes have joined Head Coach Mike Parker’s 2022-23 roster to test their grit and endurance. The Girls’ squad will be led by Senior Captain Caroline Rongen and sophomore standout Ema Hercules. Coach Parker, who enters his 6th season at GSB, believes Rongen and Hercules will provide valuable veteran leadership to the young roster as they look to make noise against a talented group of conference rivals.

“Our girls will be very competitive in the conference this year and get stronger due to their off-season training,” said Coach Parker. “We are a young team, but if we can stay healthy and have consistency in our training, we will have a great year.”

The Knights’ roster is rounded out by sophomores Angelina Bonaventura, Kate Horton, Eliana Roslund, and Mary Young, and newcomers Anna Bockelman, Braelyn Brandl, and Ciara DeCarlo. With a balanced blend of experienced runners and athletes new to the sport, the team should take strong strides this season which will pay big dividends as they compete against conference rivals at the end of the season.

On the Boys’ side, Coach Parker’s roster is guided by seven seniors: Nico Alfaro, Riley Bittman, Peter Horton, Akshay Patel, Drew Vollrath, Laksh Patel, and Tyler Tellalian. Coach Parker expects each of these seniors to have a major leadership role and mentor their fellow runners.

“For the last four years, these seniors have stuck together and sweated though miles of training runs, battled though great races, and made some good running memories along the way,” said Coach Parker. “If their work ethic is modeled by the underclassmen, our program will have an outstanding season and bright future.”

Coach Parker also has high hopes for James O’Brien ’25, who will battle for the #1 runners spot, as well as returning letter winners Lex Weber ’24, Liam Seeley ’24, and Dylan Weaver ’25 to create an exceptionally deep pack of runners.

“We will work to get a little bit stronger and faster every meet,” commented Coach Parker.

Coach Parker is joined by Assistant Coach Shelly LaBarre and Athletic Trainer Glen DePino. The Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Teams kick off their season on September 10 at Newark Academy. Be sure to check out the full season schedule on the GSB website!
