GSB Boys’ Lacrosse Ready to Build on Success, Add to List of “First”

The GSB Boys’ Lacrosse team is intently focused on building upon the successes of last season and adding to their list of “firsts.”

“Last season, it was our first time advancing to the semifinals of the Non-Public B state tournament,” said Head Coach Byron Collins, who is entering his fifth year at GSB. “We won our first-ever Skyland Conference game, and we had our first All-Skyland Conference selections. It was an impressive season.”

With the return of senior captain and United States Air Force Academy commit, defenseman/LSM Connor Albertson, as well as senior captain and Hobart and William Smith Colleges commit, goalie Ellis Wilson, the defensive backbone of the team remains firmly intact. Both Albertson and Wilson are four-year varsity starters and last year each earned First Team All-Skyland Conference Valley Division distinctions. Ellis was also named to the Second Team All-State Non-Public.

Seniors Grayson Moore, who started varsity as a freshman, and Alex Sepe will bring strength and maturity to the Knights’ midfield. Head Coach Collins anticipates them being big contributors to the success of the team along with returning seniors JW Gustafson and Will Stamato.

Junior Will Deo, who has committed to College of the Holy Cross and was named First Team All-Skyland Conference Valley Division last season, is ready to lead GSB’s attackmen alongside returning starter, junior Gavin Collins.

“We have a strong junior line-up in Will, Gavin, close defenseman Dan Taylor, defensive midfielder Patrick Henderlong, and long stick midfielder Matthew Mazzatta,” said Head Coach Collins. “I’m looking forward to having them back along with Nico Gattoni, our faceoff specialist.” Nico won 120 faceoffs over the 2021 season and is poised to improve upon that record.

Key sophomores are highlighted by returning defensive starter Michael Scarpati and middie/attackman Corbin Migliaccio.

“Not only do we have a good number of contributing sophomores, but we have a talented bunch of newcomers,” commented Coach Collins. “These include freshman Robert Herrington, Brendan Schwalb, Colin Anderson, Max Voigt, Harvey Tripp, and Brady Domsic. I’m excited to see how they develop over the season.”

Coach Collins is joined by Assistant Coach Leo Janas, who has been with him since the beginning, and newly appointed Assistant Coach James Mauch.
