GSB Boys' Basketball Among NJ Elite

GSB Boys' Basketball Among NJ Elite

By Alice Roche Cody

In Saturday's game against Elizabeth, GSB boys' basketball defeated the Minutemen 71-70, with Naasir Cunningham '24 and Drew Kania '22 each recording a double-double to help the win. Naasir scored a team-high 27 points and executed 11 rebounds, and Drew made 17 points and 13 rebounds. Also assisting the Knights' cause, Nick Losada '23 contributed 13 points.

"This victory was downright impressive," said GSB Athletic Director Will Taylor. "We have a winning record, and we're only playing top 10 teams outside of our Skylands Conference. Even without all our starters, we're number six in New Jersey – that's a testament to our players and our coach, who is the best in the state."

Of course, he is referring to Varsity Head Coach Mergin Sina, who has led the boys' team to unprecedented success the past 15 seasons. Under his guidance, the boys' basketball program has emerged as the top team in Somerset County and one of the best squads in New Jersey. Mr. Taylor added that many of Coach Sina's players who have stepped up in recent games are underclassman and will have more time to shine on the court next season.

NJ.com ranked GSB sixth in New Jersey and gave shout-outs to our players whose skills and talents landed them as Garden State season stat leaders in four categories: points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. Junior Denver Anglin '22 leads with 152 points and 10 assists; forward Drew Kania racked up 89 points, 49 rebounds, and two blocks; Mack Mgbako '23 tallied three blocks and Naasir Cunningham made seven blocks.

This strong performance will set our Knights up for success for the final two weeks of the season.
