The Gill St. Bernard’s golf team graduated five members of last year’s championship squad and entered the 2022 season with tempered expectations. However, with precise practice habits and hard work, the Knights ended their spring season with sound team results and incredible individual performances.
Sophomore Captain Lance Hollingshead earned the Skyland Conference Individual Championship and finished in a tie for first place in the Somerset County Golf Tournament. Lance’s achievement came on the heels of last year’s Non-Public B State Championship and New Jersey Third Team All-State election.
“Lance’s leadership in practice and matches was unparalleled,” said Coach Keith James. “He led by example on every level.”
While the team ended the season 4-9, the Knights finished 4th out of 20-plus teams in the Somerset County Conference Championship as well as 5th in a 20-plus team field in the Skyland Conference Championship.
“As the season progressed, the team’s scoring average improved greatly, and their practice habits paid off,” commented Coach James. “Although we didn’t do as well as I would have liked with our regular season 9-hole team matches, our final standing in the 18-hole championship team matches was impressive.”
Those standings qualified Lance Hollingshead to play in both the New Jersey State Golf Championships sectional finals and The Meet of Champions State Tournament.
“Having both the Somerset County and Skyland Conference champion is a testament to the GSB Golf program,” said Coach James. “We are a young team, and I anticipate that there will be more honors for these athletes in the future.”
