Gill St. Bernard’s Co-Hosts Philanthropist and Author Maggie Doyne for Common Grounds Speaks

Gill St. Bernard’s was proud to co-host philanthropist and author Maggie Doyne for “You Can Change The World: Finding Inspiration through Service" in the Performing Arts and Community Center’s Matthews Theater on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, as part of Common Ground Speaks

The evening event, which drew a crowd of over 200 people, was preceded by Maggie’s daytime presentations to the GSB Middle and Upper Schools on co-founding BlinkNow, a non-profit dedicated to educating children and empowering women in Nepal. By sharing the story of her 16+ year journey abroad, Maggie explored how one person can make an impact on the lives of others and can generate positive change. As she stated, “In the blink of an eye, we can all make a difference.”

Upper School Math Teacher Fred Corona first met Maggie when he coached her as a young girl on the basketball court in Mendham, NJ, and taught her as a student in his math class.

“Maggie was always a determined, hard worker,” Mr. Corona remembers. “What stood out most about her was her kindness.”

Common Ground Speaks is a consortium of Parent Associations of independent schools in the Central/Northern New Jersey area, working in a collaborative effort to bring education, information, and inspiration to our community. As a participating member, Gill St. Bernard’s partners with nearly 20 other Parents’ Associations to bring in speakers that would otherwise not be possible.

“Maggie Doyne reminded us throughout the day that we are one human family beyond gender, beyond race, and beyond location,” said Event Co-Chairs Elizabeth DiCesare P ’23 and Megan Messina P ’23.  “She touched us all with a beautiful message of hope, believing that we too can be changemakers in our world.”

Maggie’s book, Between the Mountain and the Sky, was read by all GSB employees as part of their summer reading. In opening meetings, employees gathered in small groups to discuss Maggie's life’s ambition of working with children and women in Nepal and of inspiring others to action and positive change in the world through service.
