Gill St. Bernard’s was thrilled to welcome renowned author, scientist, cartoonist, and podcaster Dr. Jorge Cham to campus on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Dr. Cham had been touring the area for the release of his latest book, Oliver’s Great Big Universe — Volcanos Are Hot! —which he described as the humor of A Diary of a Wimpy Kid but filled with actual science—and he took time out of his travels to inspire GSB students to think big, ask questions, and embrace their curiosity.
What made this author’s visit extra special was that, thanks to GSB’s all-in-one campus, Dr. Cham was able to meet with students of all ages in different sessions, each tailored with age-appropriate content. And Dr. Cham had so many different experiences to share with our students!
In addition to being a Middle Grade author, Dr. Cham is the creator of PHD Comics, an Emmy-nominated comic strip that hilariously captures the ups and downs of life in academia; he is the co-creator and Executive Producer of Elinor Wonders Why, the beloved PBS Kids series that sparks curiosity and exploration for children across 78 countries; he’s also the co-host of the popular iHeart Radio show Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe; and he has co-authored the award-winning book We Have No Idea, along with its sequel FAQ-U. This is on top of holding a Ph.D. in Robotics from Stanford and having worked at Caltech
Head Librarian Kristen Armstrong shared that "I feel it's incredibly valuable for students to see that you can be both a mechanical engineer who builds robots and a graphic artist who writes comic books and content for children's TV shows. Like many of us in life, you go to college with a plan, and you can always pivot, change your mind, and go in a different direction."
From our youngest learners in Preschool to our Upper School students, Dr. Cham spread his love for discovery through both art and media, and all our students had the chance to engage with his creative and scientific mind.
As an added bonus, all our Second through Fifth Graders received a copy of his latest Oliver book, and as evidenced by their enthusiasm, they couldn’t wait to get their hands on it.
Happy reading, creating, and scientific dreaming, everyone!
