Cheerleading Squad Enters Winter Season in High Spirits

GSB Cheerleading opens the winter sports season with pom poms held high.

Building upon last year’s momentum, the 2022-2023 cheer team boasts the largest roster seen in several seasons. Twelve students signed up to sport the Knight’s blue and white, including seven returning athletes.

"This is my second season coaching this team, and I am incredibly grateful and excited to have this group of girls involved in this aspect of our school's athletic program,” said Head Coach Margery Schiesswohl. “Last year was a chance to learn the ropes and see where attention was needed. This year, under the leadership of our new Athletic Director, our Cheer Squad is looking forward to being more of a presence throughout the campus.”

Coach Schiesswohl brings 30+ years of choreography and dance experience to cheer practice, and under her trained eye, a variety of new elements are being unveiled this year including halftime dance routines, stunts, and sideline cheers.

Built into those refreshed elements will be high-level tumbling by Gannon University commit Ally Ross, sophomore Savanna Zucker, and freshman newcomer Aliza Riaz and complex pyramid formations reliant on the unwavering strength of base girls Natasha Elleston ’25, Lily Fava ’24, Alyssa Loss ’24, and Becca Moore ’23 and the fearlessness of flyers Sara Rodriguez ’23 and Gavin Godfrey Ryan ’26.

“The team would not be where it is if it weren’t for the continued commitment to the program by our veteran seniors,” Coach Schiesswohl stated. “In addition to those girls already mentioned, Maddie Buynak, Sophie Coyle, and Izzy Della Pello have cheered for GSB since Middle School. They have generated excitement for our program and helped bring it to a level of commitment that is equal to that of our other athletic teams.”

The team is undeniably the "face of GSB spirit and pride" in all aspects of school activities, and the bright smiles of our most enthusiastic Knights will be forefront at pep rallies, basketball games, and special school events. Go, Knights!
