Building the Future: GSB Golf Lays the Foundation for Success

Although the 2025 season didn't yield a win on the scoreboard, it was a foundational year of growth and learning for the Gill St. Bernard’s Varsity Golf team. With a final record of 0–10, this young and developing squad leaned into the challenges of competing in one of the most competitive conferences in the state—emerging stronger, more experienced, and excited for what lies ahead.

Daniel Scali, the team's lone returning varsity player and captain, had his best high school season, averaging around 40 strokes per round and earning Honorable Mention recognition. Scali's consistency and mentorship set the tone for a team of first-time varsity athletes.

One of the season's additional bright spots was Henry Ehmann, a standout freshman who earned Skyland Conference (Raritan Division) First Team honors. Henry consistently shot between 37 and 39 throughout the season, establishing himself as the most talented golfer on the team and an inspirational leader. He embraced an "unofficial assistant coach" role, helping teammates refine their techniques and stay positive throughout the year.

Eight players gained their first varsity match experience this season—a testament to the rebuilding nature of the year and a promising sign of what's to come. Senior Zack Dononhue, although new to the program, played a crucial leadership role and modeled strong commitment and dedication, especially as the spring schedule intensified.

"What I'll remember most this season is how the team stayed positive and had fun, even in tight losses. They supported each other every step of the way," said Head Varsity Coach Graham Touhey.

Despite a tough record, each player made measurable progress, lowering their scores throughout the season. The focus was on the process, improvement, and team chemistry—and the results are already showing.

"I'm proud of how this team grew—on the course and as a group,” said Coach Touhey. “They love the game and leaned into every challenge we faced."

The Knights used every match as an opportunity to assess the competition and learn from it. They know what it takes to succeed in this conference and are motivated to take their game to the next level.

"In postseason conversations, I could feel their passion, said Coach Touhey. They're eager to work, improve, and return stronger. The foundation is there—and the future looks bright."
