Boys’ Lacrosse Members Shine on Regional Stage

The boys’ lacrosse program had three players recently compete at a major regional lacrosse tournament last week, showcasing some of the best talent in New Jersey and in surrounding states as well.

There are four super regions (North, South, East & West) that comprise for the overall national tournament. To make Team New Jersey, a player goes through a rigorous tryout process. Afterwards, 44 players are invited back to play in one game, and from that game, the team is finalized to 23 players selected to represent Team New Jersey. There are two levels to this club team, Highlight Division and Command Division.

Defenseman Connor Albertson ’22 was selected to the Highlight Division, while attackman Will Deo ’23 was chosen to the Command Division. Also, Under Armour selected players for its 2022 Spotlight Game in October, and chose goalie Ellis Wilson ’22 for this honor.

In addition to Gill student-athletes being selected to participate in this major showcase, boys’ lacrosse Head Coach Byron Collins led one of these impressive club teams, taking the helm of the Command Division.

"What an incredible honor it was to be selected the head coach of Team New Jersey,” said Collins. “Being born and raised in New Jersey, there nothing like representing your home state and leading a bunch of young men with New Jersey on their uniforms. And to be able to represent Gill St. Bernard's School and our lacrosse program in this event is pretty special.”

During the East Regional Tournament, Command Division went 3-1 in pool play to receive the #1 seed, and eventually went on to defeat Team Philadelphia, 10-3, to claim the regional championship. Deo especially had an incredible showing, contributing three goals and two assists, in the win. Team New Jersey will now advance to the Main Stage in Virginia Beach in October.

"What a way to end the summer,” said the winning coach Collins. “It has been a long road but well worth it to hear "New Jersey" is the East Super Regional Champs. We brought a bunch of kids from all over the Garden State together in a short period of time. They all bought in to what the coaching staff asked of them and I could not be prouder of them.”

In the Highlight Division rounds, Team New Jersey advance to the championship game after defeating Team Conny 7-2 in the semifinals, but eventually fell to Team Philadelphia, 8-3, in the finals.

“I am so proud of how far our Gill St. Bernard's boys’ lacrosse program has developed in such a short time,” reflected Collins. “It is truly a bunch of remarkable student-athletes whom I have the utmost respect for and cannot wait to get back together with them all. The whole team should be proud to have our first Knights honored, Connor and Will, by their selection to the Under Armour Teams. They played a part in pushing these individuals to reach these heights and really shows how bright the future of the program is at GSB. Also, a huge shout out to Ellis, for being selected to the Junior Spotlight game, which is an amazing accomplishment."
