Award-Winning Children’s Author Mac Barnett Visits GSB

Thanks to a generous grant from the Parents’ Association as well as to the special coordination efforts of Michelle Leo P ’24, New York Times bestselling author Mac Barnett visited GSB’s Preschool through Grade 6 via Zoom on Friday, January 13, 2023.

The award-winning children’s author read some of his newer works and delighted students with his humorous tales about the writing life. Students took part in grade-specific activities leading up to and following the event and had the opportunity to ask Mac questions live during the virtual presentation.

Signed and personalized books can be ordered through Mac's local bookstore, East Bay Booksellers. Please place your orders by tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, so he can stop by to sign the books next week.

Please enjoy our photo gallery from the event and the list of student activities, below!

Preschool: Read Extra Yarn and colored in sweaters with their “extra yarn” for a specific recipient of their choice.

PreK and Kindergarten: Read one of The Shape Trilogy books and watched the trailer for the corresponding show Shape Island (which comes out on Apple TV this Friday). They then drew their own versions of the characters.

1st Grade: Students read Circle and drew what shape they thought might have been hiding in the cave following the cliff hanger at the end of the story.

1st Grade, Wild Wednesday: Read Extra Yarn and then worked on their copy, paste, and slide navigation skills in Google Slides by copy and pasting items from one slide to their sweater on another slide. In Spanish, they wrote who they would give their sweater to if they had extra yarn.

2nd Grade: Read and discussed The Shape Trilogy books in class and watched the trailer for the corresponding show Shape Island.

3rd & 4th Grade: Watched Mac Barnett & Shawn Harris' "Live Cartoons" reading of The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza: Chapter 1 and then worked on their comic skills by doing a complete the comic activity. Students also used # blocks to create Square and Triangle after being inspired by Mac’s presentation.

5th & 6th Grade: Discussed Mac Barnett's presentation and tips on the writing life in Middle School Advisory.
