Alex Borto Signs Professional Contract
Standout GSB goalie Alex Borto will be foregoing his junior and senior years at Gill after officially signing with Fulham FC of the English Football League (EFL) Championship; the second highest professional soccer league in England. Borto makes the extraordinary jump to the professional levels after a remarkable career at Gill. Last fall, Borto helped GSB claim its fifth state championship while posting ten shutouts and being selected Third-Team All-State. “You could tell very early on that Borto was pretty special,” said legendary Head Boys’ Soccer Coach Tony Bednarsky. “What sets him apart is that he has the skillset of a good field player, he could honestly probably start for us in field, so his distribution with his feet and hands is beyond his years.” Since stepping between the goal posts his freshman year, Borto had been receiving plenty of attention from major collegiate Division I programs and other professional clubs and around the world, but ultimately settled on Fulham FC. “Borto made a great name for himself here at Gill; he helped us win two state championships, and we experienced a lot of success with him,” said Bednarsky. “Goalie is a difficult position to replace in general, let alone a phenomenal one such as Borto, but we have been very fortunate to have a tradition of very good goalkeepers, and we do not expect that to change.” A full feature from NJ.com on Borto’s journey to the professional level can be read here. While we will truly miss having Alex at Gill, we wish him the best of luck with this amazingly impressive opportunity!
