A Collaborative Mural Brings Serenity to the Upper School Quiet Room

By Associate Director of Marketing and Communications Kathleen Bartlett

The Upper School Quiet Room in Gill St. Bernard’s Hillard House has undergone a transformation, thanks to a creative collaboration between the Art Club, the Mental Health Club, and the Painting Class. Students came together to design and paint a mural that enhances the space’s calming atmosphere, making it a true haven for relaxation and reflection.

The idea stemmed from a conversation in the Mental Health Club about creating a student-centered project that promoted mental well-being. Recognizing that the Quiet Room—already a space for students to decompress, study, or take a break—could use something more than just new furniture, members of both the Mental Health and Art clubs decided to join forces and bring art into the space. The result? A one-of-a-kind mural that blends elements of nature, movement, and tranquility to provide an extra layer of comfort and serenity.

The collaborative process started with students mapping out their vision, sketching their designs directly on the wall, selecting colors, and carefully bringing their ideas to life with paint. The mural features flowing water, plants, and animals, all carefully chosen to evoke a sense of peace. Fish swim in a koi pond, birds soar through the sky, and vibrant flowers bloom, creating an immersive and relaxing environment. A quote from Paul Simon’s “The Sound of Silence” is woven into the design, reinforcing the room’s purpose as a retreat from the bustle of the school day.

For many students, the Quiet Room is an essential space to recharge during the day. “The mural makes the room a bit more comfortable for people,” said Maddie Dittman ’27. “They come into the room to relax and get away from school for a moment, and this helps it feel more lively and beautiful.”

Aishani Penuballi ’28 agreed, adding, “It helps people really separate and get away from it all during the day if they need to. I feel that the entire mural makes the room more comfortable.”

The project reflects the importance of mental health and self-care within the GSB community. In the fast-paced environment of high school, having a dedicated space to unwind—surrounded by a mural designed by students, for students—makes a meaningful difference.

Thanks to this collaborative effort, the Quiet Room now offers more than just a quiet space—it’s a visually inspiring retreat where students can take a deep breath, reset, and find a moment of peace.
