Noting the "most perfect weather," Lower School Director Honor Taft welcomed a gathering of students, faculty and parents at the Scout Cabin this morning to celebrate the 35th annual Stone Soup Day. In keeping with the Stone Soup fable, the event highlights the idea that sharing has the power to create abundance. As Taft offered, "When each of us contributes one small part, we can make something wonderful that can be enjoyed by many. That is what this morning symbolizes."
After Taft's remarks, the ceremonial soup stone made its way into the mix. Tradition holds that the stone is placed into the pot by the youngest student in the school, this year, Alane Richardson '32. The stone was given to her by the eighth-grade lifers, students who have been at the school since kindergarten or earlier. Presenting the stone to her was Robbie DeVergillo '22, who had been entrusted with the soup stone as a preschooler eleven years ago. After the stone had been placed, each Lower School child contributed a small bag of vegetables or noodles to the soup pot.
Held each October, Stone Soup ushers in the season of giving and marks the first among several service learning projects in our Lower School. In preparation for this year's event, the school held a Stone Soup planting day in garden over the summer. Lower School students harvested those vegetables, on Monday, gathering 175 pounds of beans, beets, kale, peppers, radishes, tomatoes and turnips. The vegetables, along with 75 pounds of apples harvested from the school orchard, were delivered to the Chester Food Pantry, which is in dire need of food and other supplies, this morning.
