Middle School Student Helps Operation Smile

On Wednesday, sixth-grader Mary Jane Granito presented Operation Smile with a check for $1,176.73: the total from a three-day bake sale that the student organized and ran herself. When asked about the initiative, Middle School Director Kyle Armstrong said, "I was really impressed with Mary Jane's follow through. It started with her seeing a commercial for Operation Smile. After that, she researched the organization and contacted people there. She even invited them to campus to accept the check and share a little about the organization's work with the Middle School.
Operation Smile offers surgical intervention in third-world countries to children born with cleft palates or other facial deformities. According to the organization, Granito's gift will allow four children to receive the surgery that will dramatically improve their lives. For Granito, this is only the first of many contributions she hopes to make. "I definitely want to do more," she said. "I hope to be able to start a Middle School club next year and eventually go on a mission with Operation Smile."
