This spring’s production will feature the award-winning GSB Players—a recipient of two Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical. Based on the Gospel According to Matthew, with book by John-Michael Tebelak and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the GSB Players' Godspell is sure to captivate audiences with its unique “steampunk” theme.
“Steampunk,” a genre of science fiction, can be described as a 19th century view of the future which frequently gives a nod to Victorian England and the American Old West. Performing Arts Chair Paul H. Canada’s inspiration for a “steampunk” themed Godspell came from the opening number of the show, “Tower of Babel,” which features numerous historical philosophers and religious leaders who, much like carnival snake-oil salesmen, try to convince their audience that they each have the antidote to life’s afflictions. “As I began to explore the ‘steampunk’ theme,” said Canada, “ I realized that setting the production in an Old West traveling carnival and medicine show would serve the musical in a multitude of ways. Not only would it work for “Tower of Babel,” but each ensemble member could easily be identified as a ‘carnival type’—a sharpshooter, fortune-teller, snake charmer, puppeteer, chorus girls, belly dancer, male impersonator and lion tamer—to bring a fresh perspective to the well-known biblical stories and parables.”
