Parents from all three divisions filled the Athletic Center for the annual Parents' Association Kick-Off Breakfast.
Welcoming new and returning parents, Parents' Association President Ann Matthews P '16, '18, '24, addressed the gathering and highlighted some of the ways in which volunteering at Gill has enriched her own life. Following Matthews, Head of School Sid Rowell P '08, '14 spoke to the group and shared his summer reading list. In a nod to one of the titles—Krista Tippett's Becoming Wise—Rowell reflected on the idea of "making belonging infectious" in the school community. Together, Matthews and Rowell set the tone for another great year of community-building and volunteerism at GSB.
Afterward, members of the steering committee and individual event chairs shared specific highlights and details about volunteer opportunities. Matthews then invited everyone to visit tables of information for each of the Parents' Association programs and to talk with the chairs. The range of activities represented—from involvement with major events, such as Homecoming
and the auction
, to the Athletics Booster Club
and the visiting speaker series
—evidences the remarkable camaraderie and volunteerism of our parent community.
Matthews also offered her special thanks to the co-chairs of the breakfast, Betsy Halstead P'23 '25 and Anna Walz P'23, for all of their efforts to make the event so successful. Among their signature contributions were welcoming baskets of apples—freshly picked from the GSB orchard—placed on all of the tables. Matthews and her executive committee, Sharon Bittman P '17, '23 (vice president), Bonnie Lavoie P '21 (secretary) and Jaime Goodrich P '27, '30 (treasurer), look forward to another great year of parent programs at Gill St. Bernard's.
By the time the gathering began to break up, the apples had been claimed, and the morning had yielded many new and returning volunteers—a wonderful promise to the year ahead.
