Cover: Student Artwork

The cover was inspired by the feature story GSB Mosaic: Identity and Culture. Alumni director, Chanelle Walker explained, “I thought about the subject of the feature and reached out to Fine Arts Chair Sarah Isusi to think about how we can take this important topic and explore it visually.” The result was using student artwork from two projects assigned by Isusi. The posterized self-portraits are acrylic paintings in a monochromatic color scheme. They were inspired by the work of Shepard Fairey, the artist who designed the Barack Obama "Hope" poster. The symbols are narrative screen sprints, in which students created stencils that represent aspects of their personal and cultural heritage. These were then printed in a series on paper, canvas and collage board. Click or tap anywhere on the images (or use the arrows below) to scroll through the full gallery.
