The Middle School athletic program creates a positive experience for student-athletes of all levels and interests. Physical fitness is an important component of a well-rounded and balanced education.

Students in fifth- and sixth-grade attend physical education (PE) classes, in which they rotate through different activities and team sports, spending about two weeks on each. The emphasis is on fitness and skill development, as well as on cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship. Classes meet three to four times each week at the end of the academic day, scheduling that allows students to work with our coaches as well as with Middle School PE teachers.
Seventh- and eighth-graders can choose from a range of team sports or a supervised PE option each season. In addition, some students may choose to practice with a team, while opting out games, matches and meets.

For team sports, practice is held from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on school days, and eight to 12 games are scheduled during the season. The focus is on skill development, participation, and commitment. To this end, the school maintains a "no cut" policy for its Middle School teams.
Our Middle School program effectively prepares our young athletes to transition seamlessly into the more rigorous junior varsity and varsity programs in our Upper School.

A League of Their Own

Our Middle School teams are part of a recently-formed middle school consortium: The Private School Athletic Conference. The 17 member schools work together to provide varied and fair schedules for middle schools in the league.

Building Character Through Athletics

At Gill St. Bernard's, the values of fair play, enthusiasm, inclusion, kindness and team work are an essential aspect of the athletic program. The Middle School Athletics character awards, given at the end of each season, pay tribute to those students who contribute to the overall spirit of play and model the school's core values of courage, integrity, respect, compassion and excellence in the realm of athletics.
Gill St. Bernard’s is an independent, coeducational day school for students age three through grade 12, located in suburban New Jersey. Each of the three school divisions provides a rigorous, meaningful and age-appropriate curriculum, and all students benefit from the environmental learning opportunities that exist on our 208-acre campus.
