Pediatric Gastroenterologist Visits Middle School Science Class

Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Dr. Alycia Leiby, from the Goryeb Children's Hospital, visited Jennifer Schuchman's science class on February 6, to talk about common diseases associated with the digestive system, including Celiac Disease, Crohn's Disease, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She discussed diagnostic techniques, such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, and insertion of gastric feeding tubes and brought the tools used during these procedures so students could see how they work. They even had the opportunity to handle the tools and practice some procedures on a doll.

Dr. Leiby closed the presentation discussing some common allergies, such as gluten, lactose, etc., and she shared gluten free/dairy free foods. According to Ms. Schuchman, "Her presentation was incredibly interactive and informative, and we were really lucky to have her spend the day with us!"  At the end of February, a cardiologist will be visiting the class to demonstrate a sheep heart dissection and talk about common cardiovascular problems.
