Blue in the Face

Blue in the Face, the newest addition to the Upper School choral program, and now in its second year, is a "vocal band" that mixes elements of a cappella singing with the sounds of an indie folk-rock group, and with the singers playing instruments and accompanying themselves.

Co-Directors Amy and David Southerland premiered the band's 2019-2020 season on Wednesday morning in the Performing Arts & Community Center with a special performance for Lower School students. The spectacular set list included: "The Mountain," "Your Love is All I Know," and "You Never Need Anybody," arranged by David Southerland, along with "Half-Moon," arranged on commission by renowned singer/arranger Deke Sharon of the "Pitch Perfect" movies.

Lower & Middle School Division Director Kyle Armstrong said, "This is a great community-building opportunity, as this kind of cross-division experience is aspirational for younger students. You can just see it in their eyes as they look up at the older students on the stage — they begin thinking, 'Maybe I can do that one day, too!'"

The band performed again later in the morning for the Upper School, and it will be featured at the Sunday, November 17th GSB Open House.
