PA Hosts Annual Welcome Breakfast

Entering the beautifully decorated Athletic Center for the annual Parents’ Association Welcome Breakfast, new and returning GSB parents enjoyed making connections while learning about the many ways to get involved in the life of our school. Attractively adorned information tables, along with tabletop folders of flyers, highlighted this year's events and the myriad of volunteer opportunities awaiting them.

Breakfast Co-Chairs Michelle Lawse, P ‘32, and Sacha Marcucci, P ’26, ’29,’32, warmly welcomed the gathering and thanking those who helped make it a special event. Introducing Head of School Sid Rowell, P '08, '14, he then opened his remarks acknowledging the event of 18 years ago that changed so much for so many. With an invitation to pause at 8:46 a.m. – just a few moments away – the Chapel bells rang across campus in remembrance of 9/11.

Mr. Rowell then took a moment to reflect on just one of the eleven books from his summer reading list, The Four Essential Ingredients for Effective Parenting, by Dr. Ronald Raymond. Noting the book was in manuscript form when he was invited to provide feedback to the author, he contends the four ingredients of unconditional positive regard, empathy, congruence, and consistency remain a constant focus in his interactions today – even though his children are “grown.”

PA President Monica Micera, P ‘22 , then introduced the 2019-2020 PA Executive and PA Steering Committees, and she thanked Jennifer Doherty, Director of Parent Relations and Special Events, for her tireless assistance. Presenting an overview of the many ways the PA supported GSB last year – from technology to guest speakers, assemblies to performing arts equipment – most notably was contributing significantly to the renovation of the SBS Pavilion with the naming of the Parents’ Association Student Art Gallery. Monica then read an engaging, original, and inspiring poem about being involved in the life of the GSB Parents’ Association.

Speaking on behalf of the Office of Advancement, Director Meredith Marks shared the exciting news about the upcoming Comedy Night Fundraiser Event featuring a fellow GSB parent and nationally acclaimed comedian, Jim Breuer, in the Performing Arts and Community Center on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m.

Following the keynote speakers, individual event chairs shared the details of their events and volunteer opportunities. Among these were Homecoming/Family Day, Community Through Conversation, and the annual spring PA Fashion Event.

Special thanks to all who attended this morning and, if you were not able to join us, you may browse our website and learn more about PA events and sign up to volunteer. We need you!
