GSB Mt. Rushmore Winners Announced!

The highest vote earner was Shannon Murphy ’11, with the former standout track athlete receiving 18,281 votes. Murphy holds numerous Gill St. Bernard's track records, including the 100, 200 and 400 meters and the 4x400. She also won the Non-Public B 400 meter championship as a senior, and also was part of the 4x400 gold medal crew in that same meet.
Getting the second-most votes was Suzanne Jensen Sweeney ’76. She earned an incredible 15 varsity letters and eventually served as captain in each of her four sports. She went on to earn a field hockey scholarship at Kent State, and was the team's leading scorer for three years and still holds Kent State records for goals (26) and points (52) in a season and career points.
Grabbing third place was Erin Bayley Buraszeski ’99. The three-sport star scored 100 goals in soccer, recorded over 1,000 points in basketball, and batted an unbelievable .666 her senior season of softball. She went on to compete on the soccer pitch at Monmouth University where she served as a captain her junior and senior seasons.
Grabbing the fourth and final spot in the fan vote was the Bednarsky family (1989–present). The Bednarskys consist of coaches Tony and Donna and their four children: Peter ‘08, Andrew ‘10, Kathryn ‘14, and Stevo ‘17. Tony leads the pack with 512 career wins (444 with Gill), four Non-Public B state championships, nine Prep B state crowns and 19 conference titles. Donna accumulated more than 100 wins as head girls soccer coach at Gill, and her squads won three conference and three Prep B titles. All four children excelled on the soccer pitch and were awarded numerous all-conference, all-county, and all-prep recognition throughout their playing days.
Erin Bayley Buraszeski and the Bednarskys were also chosen by writers as their choices for GSB’s Mt. Rushmore. Also being recognized by the publication was Daisha Simmons ’10 and the Sina Family (2004–present).
Simmons is Somerset County's all-time girls scoring leader with 2,488 points. In her senior year, she registered six double-doubles, eight triple-doubles, and even compiled one quadruple-double on her way to Star-Ledger Payer of the Year honors. Simmons went on to play one season at Rutgers, three at Alabama and a graduate year at Seton Hall University, where she was Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2014-15.
Similar to the Bednarskys, the Sinas have had incredible careers on the hardwood for Gill. Mergin Sina has coached basketball for 16 years at Gill St. Bernard's, including the last 10 as the boys’ coach. In his first six seasons as girls coach, Sina's teams won two Somerset County Tournament titles, one Prep B crown, and a North Jersey, Non-Public B championship. His boys’ teams have claimed seven SCT titles, including the last five, and his 2011-12 team reached the Non-Public B final before falling to St. Anthony. His children, Jaren Sina ’13 and Jasmine Sina ’14, were prolific scorer for the Knights. Jaren set county records in career points (2,146) and assists (861), while Jasmine scored nearly 1,300 points during here time at GSB.
