Middle School Closing Exercises 2019

Earlier today, GSB held its annual Middle School Closing Exercises in the Athletic Center. At the ceremony, the 62 members of the class of 2023 were recognized for their successful completion of the eighth grade and were honored for their achievements during the past academic year.

Director of Lower & Middle School Kyle Armstrong began the program by welcoming the gathering and thanking the students for a terrific year and the teachers for all of the support and dedication they give to the Middle School.

Armstrong further reflected on how he had the privilege to attend West Point’s graduation ceremony a few days earlier to see a former student graduate from the prestigious military academy. He distinctly remembered one of the speakers at the graduation saying to “always put people first” and believed that should be the basis of any successful community.

“Today is a day of transition, and transitions always allow us to reflect on what was and to reframe what could be,” Armstrong said. “As you think about your next step—and this message applies to all of us—put people first in your lives. This takes effort and commitment, but when we take care of each other—practically, emotionally, and socially—we all succeed.”

Afterwards, the Middle School faculty presented this year’s awards, recognizing students for character and citizenship as well as academic achievement.

After the awards were conferred, each of the students came forward to receive a certificate of completion and Head of School Sid Rowell officially presented the Class of 2023.

Congratulations to our eighth-grade students on advancing to Upper School and to all of our Middle School students for successfully completing the 2018-19 academic year!
