Michael Surella enters his fifth year as head varsity softball coach at Gill St. Bernard’s. His extensive coaching background in the sport has helped carry on the Knights' strong tradition with the program.

Surella has led the team to two Mountain Division Skyland Conference titles (2016, 2017) and eight players have been named to the All-Conference team over the last two seasons.

“Gill is a great place to coach,” says Surella. “The facilities are top notch and the entire student body gets behind their teams no matter the sport. The support we receive from the entire GSB community makes it a special place to be a part of.”

Along with coaching at Gill, Surella is a former Mendham Township Middle School softball coach, and helped the program to three consecutive Morris County finals while winning two titles. Surella also previously ran his own club program, the Mendham Mavericks.

“Softball requires a very high tolerance for failure and thus mental toughness is essential,” Surella explains. “This is an important skill that as we develop on the diamond becomes a valuable asset off the field as well.”

Middle School

The Middle School softball program helps students work on their skills in preparation to joining the Upper School teams. The Middle School team iserves as an important foundation in sustaining the varsity programs’ recent string of success.
