College Athletic Recruiting

Approximately 20% of Gill St. Bernard’s graduating senior class participates in college athletics at the NCAA Division I, II, or III level. Our students represent colleges and universities in athletic conferences such as The Ivy League, Patriot League, Big 10, A-10, SEC, MAAC, NESCAC, UAA, Centennial Conference, and more.

College Athletic Recruiting Process

Grade 9

Academic Preparedness and Development — work hard in the classroom!

Athletic Development — compete for GSB and a club team (if appropriate), utilize GSB Strength & Conditioning and our training facilities, get involved with summer camps and clinics.

Attend GSB’ College Information Knights and stay up to date with NCAA recruiting education.

Start to identify your academic and athletic fit.

Begin researching websites of colleges that interest you.

Create an athletics resume. View sample resume

Grade 10

Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center — Choose option 1 to create a Free Profile Page Account. If NCAA Division 1 is a possibility, choose option 3 to create an Academic and Amateurism Account ($100 fee).

Continue your academic development with your current coursework and the classes you sign up for in your junior year.

Take a practice SAT or ACT.

Continue your athletic development with GSB and club competition as well as summer camps and clinics.

Meet with your GSB and/or club Head Coach to:

Assess your current and future talent level

Access video via HUDL to compile a recruiting highlight video

Meet with College Guidance, Head Coach and/or Ms. Noon, Director of Athletics, to:

Discuss initial list of schools

Discuss SAT/ACT testing timeline

Review NCAA rules and communication strategies

Fill out and submit college athletic program questionnaires at schools of interest

Email college coaches

Attach athletic resume

Attach your current transcript, which you can get from GSB's registrar

Include courses you plan on taking in your junior year

Attach your GSB schedule and club/travel teams schedule(s)

Continue to research colleges and universities that are the right fit for you

Have your parents fill out financial aid net price calculator on college/university websites to see if school is within your family's financial means

Social Media

Create athletic profile

Follow college athletic programs and members of the coaching staff

Be smart what your posting

Grade 11

Be sure you are registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center — see registration instructions above

Take the SAT and/or the ACT

Continue your academic development and plan for your senior year courses

Fill out and submit college athletic questionnaires

Communicate with college coaches:

Email updated resume, transcripts, videos, athletic schedules

Respond if a coach reaches out to you and follow up if need be

Engage in conversation if you have a phone call with a college coach

Meet with your GSB coaches and club coaches to continue assess your ability

Continue your athletic development with GSB and your club team, attend a college summer camp or clinic

Plan college visits

Meet with a member of the coaching staff

Do research on the college and athletic program prior to the visit

Attend a practice or a contest

Take an admissions tour

Attend an admissions information session

Grade 12

Continue your academic development, Senior year grades matter!

Take the SAT/ACT as needed

Communicate with college coaches

Always include updated academic and athletic information

Ask questions that you would like answered

Be confident that you can have a conversation with a college coach

Fill out and submit questionnaires if needed

Continue to set-up college visits

Meet with coaching staff and Head Coach

Meet student athletes on the team

Attend a practice or contest

Attend classes if possible

Stay overnight with a student-athlete, Official or Unofficial visit

Continue your athletic development

Narrow your list down and be realistic about your choices

Follow college application deadlines

Apply for financial aid if necessary

Commit and sign an institutional athletic financial aid agreement for students receiving an athletic scholarship to an NCAA DI or DII school.

Navigating the NCAA

NCAA Division I - Highest level of competition at the collegiate level. Most Athletic Powers, Most Athletic Scholarships, Most Rules, Scholarship athletes sign an institutional athletic financial aid agreement. Must have Academic and Amateurism Certification with the NCAA.

NCAA Division II - Smaller budgets, Less Athletic Scholarships, Fewer Rules, Scholarship athletes sign an institutional athletic financial aid agreement. Must have Academic and Amateurism Certification with the NCAA.

NCAA Division III - Academics is a priority, No Athletic Scholarships, No Recruiting Calendars, Scholarship athletes do not sign an institutional athletic financial aid agreement. Athletes do NOT need to be certified with the NCAA.

Scholarship Information

Athletic scholarships are only offered at the NCAA Division I and II levels.  At the NCAA DI level, Head Count sports (Men's FBS Football and Basketball, Women's Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Gymnastics) offer full scholarships and Equivalency Sports (all other NCAA sports) generally offer partial scholarships.  Additional information on NCAA scholarships can be found here.
