Student Life

Nurturing creative passions can have an incredible impact on personal and academic growth.

As a complement to their academic curriculum, GSB Middle Schoolers have the choice to participate in a wide variety of social-emotional programming, student-led clubs, and co-curricular activities. With faculty guidance, these student life programs provide the opportunities to explore new interests, find hands-on leadership roles, and build a deeper bond with peers and the school community.

Middle School Advisory

The Middle School Advisory Program is all about IMPACT: Individuals Making Positive, Affirming Community Together.

Each Wednesday, Middle Schoolers meet for intentional discussions and community building exercises in small advisory groups that are tied to our schools' core values of Courage, Integrity, Respect, Compassion, and Excellence.. Advisory activities are often an extension of topics that Middle Schoolers were introduced to in Monday Morning Meetings, whether it be how to make informed social media decisions or how to best handle personal stress.

Middle School Advisors serve as the first point of contact between a student's family and the school and will check in with students to assist with academic progress, emotional well being, and all areas of student life. Advisors also partner with The Social Institute as a regular resource to support student's social-emotional development and help them make healthy, positive choices, whether that be at school or online.

Student-Led Clubs

All GSB Middle Schoolers select a club to participate in twice a week during each trimester. Students are empowered to design their own club offering with faculty supervision to help them develop organizational and interpersonal skills. There are generally 10+ club offerings per academic trimester.

Co-Curricular Activities

Gill St. Bernard's offers a diverse set of Middle School co-curricular activities which take place regularly during Conference Period. These activities include:

  • Affinity Groups: Affinity groups are an important aspect of our school's DEIC program in which Middle Schoolers partner with teachers and fellow classmates to create supportive, open-minded environments. During these times, groups take part in a series of vibrant character-education initiatives, such as organizing service projects, discussing current events, and leading conversations related to race, heritage, and identity.

  • Middle School Choir: The Middle School choir program is open to all 5th - 8th graders and meets regularly during the school week. Singers meet for practice and rehearsals in our campus' historic chapel and perform two large concerts per school year. The choir is a non-audition program, meaning that all students are encouraged to participate and delve into our advanced choral literature.

  • Middle School Band: The GSB Middle school band program is a vibrant co-curricular activity that allows students to develop a deeper understanding of music as an artistic experience. This program consists of two ensembles, a beginning band and an intermediate band, which provide young musicians with a unique opportunity to explore various musical genres and music theory while fostering important life skills through collaborative rehearsals and performances.

After School Study Hall

Middle School Study Hall is covered as part of tuition. The program runs daily from 3:05 - 5:45 under close faculty supervision. During Study Hall, students have the opportunity to complete assignments and/or partner with peers on group assignments in a quiet study space.
