GSB’s Secret Garden Is Best High School Musical in New Jersey!

“And the award for ‘Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical’ goes to … Gill St. Bernard’s School for their production of ‘The Secret Garden!'"
With those words, pandemonium broke out for the GSB Players at the Paper Mill Playhouse as the 13th Annual “Rising Star Awards” acknowledged this year’s GSB spring musical with its highest honor. “The Secret Garden” dominated the show as it won in 4 out of the 15 available awards for artistic and technical merit, with Amy & David Southerland winning for “Outstanding Achievement in Musical Direction,” Paul Canada and Lynn Helferich P ’08 for “Outstanding Costuming Achievement” (which Mr. Canada won for “She Loves Me” in 2007), and Paul Canada and John Helferich P ’08 for “Outstanding Scenic Achievement.”
Other Rising Star nominations for GSB this year included “Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role” (Lauren Ullrich ’08 as “Lily Craven;” Ms. Ullrich won this in 2007), “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” (Steven Helferich ‘08 as “Archibald Craven”), “Outstanding Achievement by a Teacher or Outside Director” (Director Paul Canada) and “Outstanding Achievement in Graphic Design” (Margie and Rich Palatini P ’06).
The Rising Star Awards are truly a celebration of the best in high school musical theater, as the exceptional talent and accomplishments from 100 public, private and parochial schools from across New Jersey are showcased, demonstrating enthusiasm, creativity and dedication to the fine arts. Congratulations to the GSB Players, as well as all nominees in all categories for a spectacular night of musical theater!
