In the “Order In the Court” Unit Middle School students learn about the legal process. They see a movie about the Somerset County Police Academy, then visit the Academy for self-defense training, handcuffing, CPR training and rescue and safety techniques.
The students tour the Morris County CSI Lab for fingerprinting and DNA analysis. This year they were able to visit the K-9 Unit and the Bomb Squad and saw an excellent demonstration of how K-9 dogs are trained and how they apprehend criminals.
Next they visit the Somerset County Court House. where they get to watch an on-going criminal case. From there they tour the Morris County Correctional Facility to view first hand the prisoners and their cell arrangement and to see what actual jail time is like. They will finish the Unit with “Bill of Rights Bingo”, Recognition of Famous Court Cases in the News, and a discussion with a detective from Jersey City who was featured in a segment of the TV show “Cops”.
